With the number of elderly population receiving surgical treatment increasing year by year, perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND) is increasingly attracting social attention. The blood-brain barrier is an important channel to control substances in and out of the brain. When the blood-brain barrier is damaged, harmful substances enter the brain and affect the brain function. Blood-brain barrier disruption is an important mechanism for developing PND in elderly patients. Mitochondrial dysfunction may contribute to blood-brain barrier disruption, including aspects such as oxidative stress and energy metabolism. This review summarizes the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in the development and development of PND due to blood-brain barrier disruption.
