Pain catastrophizing is an exaggerated and negative thinking set which is triggered by pain. As one of the vital adverse feelings related to pain, it can regulate the degree of pain experience by a battery of mechanisms. Thus, pain catastrophizing is possibly a potential pathogenesis and therapeutic target for pain-related diseases. Recently, with the appearance of relatively uniform scale, an increasing number of investigations choose pain catastrophizing as part of psychological assessment preoperatively, aiming at the probability that the degree of pain catastrophizing could predict the occurrence of postoperative pain. In this article, we reviewed the progress on the relevant concepts of pain catastrophizing altogether with its' possible mechanisms, evaluation methods, and capability to predict postoperative acute and chronic pain, which may provide references for clinical therapies or scientific researches focused on pain catastrophizing.
