Objective: To analyze the research hotspots and trends of dexmedetomidine in preventing postoperative neurocognitive disorders in recent years using bibliometric and visual analysis methods. Methods: Literature on dexmedetomidine for postoperative neurocognitive disorders prevention from January 2006 to August 2024 was retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. The VOSviewer software was used to perform visual analysis. Results: A total of 159 articles were included. The annual publication volume about dexmedetomidine in preventing postoperative neurocognitive disorders showed an overall upward trend, with significant growth observed after 2017. Chinese scholars leaded in publication count and British scholars achieved the highest average citations per article. BMC Anesthesiology ranked first in publication volume, while Anesthesiology was the most co-cited journal. A study on dexmedetomidine for postoperative delirium prevention published in Lancet had the highest co-citation frequency. Hotspot analysis identified keywords such as “postoperative delirium” “delirium” “sedation” “elderly patients” “cardiac surgery” and “critically ill patients”, “emergence delirium” emerging as a rapidly growing recent keyword. Conclusion: Dexmedetomidine in preventing postoperative neurocognitive disorders is a rapidly evolving and increasingly focused research field. Current research priorities emphasize delirium prevention in elderly patients undergoing cardiac surgery, while the frontier is shifting toward emergence delirium. This area remains valuable for future mechanistic exploration and clinical translation. |
