Objective: To evaluate the effect of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation on sleep quality of postoperative patients.
Methods: The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang Database, and Sinomed were electronically searched. Randomized controlled trials on the effect of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation on sleep quality of postoperative patients were included. The retrieval time was from the establishment of the database to April 10, 2024. Two reviewers independently screened the literature, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias. RevMan 5.3 software was used for meta-analysis.
Results: A total of 14 studies involving 1 213 patients were included, 599 patients in the TEAS group and 614 patients in the control group. Meta-analysis showed that compared with the control group, the TEAS group had significantly improved sleep quality (SMD = -0.83, 95% CI -1.06 to -0.60, P < 0.001) and prolonged sleep duration (SMD = 0.70,95% CI 0.31 to 1.08, P = 0.0004) after surgery. Subgroup analysis showed that in the subgroups of single intervention time, intervention frequency, density wave frequency, and intervention timing, compared with the control group, the sleep quality of the TEAS group was significantly improved (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: The current evidence indicates that TEAS is helpful for improving the sleep quality and prolong the sleep time of postoperative patients.
